Physiotherapy appointments can be completed via telehealth!

How does Telehealth physiotherapy work? I will send you a video link, using an electronic charting program called Jane App. You will use your computer or phone camera for me to be able to see you move during the appointment. During the video call we will talk about your goals for physiotherapy, complete movement and strength tests, and develop a treatment plan. Treatment will include education, exercises using items you have around your home, and I may teach you how to apply self-treatment strategies for soft tissues. People are often surprised at how much can be effectively completed online!

Is a telehealth appointment right for me?

Telehealth appointments are a great option for receiving a physiotherapy assessment and treatment. Some reasons people choose telehealth over in person appointments are to save time (no commuting time, finding parking, or sitting in a waiting room); if you live or work somewhere that does not have easy access to a physiotherapy clinic (if you live anywhere in Nova Scotia, I can treat you via telehealth!); if you are at home with children (it can be easier to have an appointment while they're napping, or they can even be playing in the same room as you during your appointment); and if you are newly postpartum and you simply don't feel like leaving your house. Other reasons include early days post-operative from a knee or joint replacement surgery, when it may be difficult to leave the house/find transportation to a clinic; being immunocompromised and not wishing to go to a public location; or general mobility issues.

What are some tips for a successful telehealth appointment?

* have a phone or computer with a camera that you can move around so I can watch you moving from different angles

* have space where you will be able to move freely (laying on the floor for an exercise, for example)

* wear comfortable clothing that will allow me to see your movements

* if you have any weights/exercise balls/resistance band, etc., have them available - I'd much rather teach you how to use something you already have, vs buying something new

* a good quality speaker and microphone, or ear buds so that you can hear and be heard without being attached to your computer/phone with a headphone wire

* an internet connection that supports video calls
